An enlightening journey

Last year UK200Group organised ‘Not the Olympics 2012’, a nationwide charity event for the very worthy Alzheimer’s Society, in which UK200Group member firms were tasked with relaying an Olympic-style torch across the UK.

The rules stipulated that it could only be done by walking, running, cycling or, indeed, any other innovative method of transport other than a modern car.

Around 33 member firms took part in the event coming up with some creative ideas using some weird and wonderful modes of transport that included a private plane, gyrocopter, canoe, tractors, bikes, vintage cars and buses as well as ‘shanks’ pony’. Each firm linked up with their appropriate neighbour generating both publicity and cash donations as they journeyed across their respective regions to pass on the ‘baton’. By the end of 2011 a grand total of over £30,000 was achieved, a fantastic result that exceeded expectations.

Colin Howe, the then president of UK200Group, said ‘This whole exercise has effectively demonstrated the close community spirit of UK200Group with both members and their staff having given up their precious time to work together for a worthy cause’.
